▬Chapter 17▬

Olivia closed her eyes, in the dimly lit room, and pretended the arms she had wrapped around herself were Calum’s. His arms had provided peace and protectiveness, even if he had only had them around her in greeting. The last time anyone had hugged her had also been Calum. It had been six years ago and her body sucked it up then as much as it did now. For those few precious moments she didn’t have anything to worry about or be vigilant. When his warm strong arms enveloped her, it was like they were protecting her from the world. It was the second most difficult thing she had done, to force herself out of his arms. The first had been to force him out of her life, but she had never regretted it. Otherwise, his success or his family’s success never would have happened.

It also made Olivia realize how very lonely her existence was. She had purposely cut herself off from everyone, so no one could get hurt. It was hard to not have anyone to confide in or to laugh with. She missed Ruby. Ruby never knew what happened in her home, but she always knew when Olivia needed a hug and ice cream. Now there was, no one. She was thankful for Shelly, but she didn’t allow herself to get close and build a relationship. Her father already tested the waters on using Shelly as a way to keep her in line.

The irony of what happened in this room was not lost on her. She hadn’t meant to insult Calum, but she understood why he took it the way he did. It was for the best, but it still hurt when he looked at her like she was the scum of the earth.

This time she hadn’t wanted him to leave, she just knew she couldn’t leave with him. With only Calum leaving there would an interrogation and consequences after everyone left. But, if she went with him, what little life she had would be over.

Olivia broke out in a cold sweat just thinking about the belt. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to have a couple of drinks. It would help numb the pain. It would also mean she wouldn’t be able to drive, so she quickly nixed the idea. No matter what happened she would be driving away from here.

For once she was happy to have her car. It was a way to escape. Even when she had gotten the car, she knew it was another tool for her father. The ride home from graduation was like any other ride with Miles Crawford. They sat in silence while Olivia concentrated on sitting with both feet on the floor, with her back straight. She had gotten her ear pulled multiple times, while riding with her father, to correct her embarrassing posture.

Miles had unexpectedly broken the silence with his calm declaration. “I purchased a car for you Olivia.”

‘Escape!’ Immediately entered her mind and she tried not to sow her burgeoning excitement.
